Giles W.L. Boland, MD
Chair, Department of Radiology
Dr. Giles Boland is the Philip H. Cook Professor of Radiology at Harvard Medical School and the Chair of Radiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
Dr. Boland received his medical degree at the London Hospital Medical College, London University, and completed his residency at Guy’s Hospital, London. In 1992 he began his fellowship in Radiology at Massachusetts General Hospital, and joined the faculty in 1994 before moving to BWH as Chair of Radiology in 2016.
As Chair of Radiology, Dr. Boland is responsible for a department that performs and interprets approximately 800,000 imaging exams per year, and includes over 100 attending physicians, 80 physician trainees and a large complement of technologists, nurses and support personnel. Dr. Boland’s areas of expertise include practice and workflow management, leadership, information technology (PACS, teleradiology, voice recognition, decision support) and development of new markets. His current focus is on the delivery of cost-effective patient outcomes. He has written numerous peer-reviewed articles on these topics and has conducted numerous presentations in over 15 countries on these issues. As a current practicing radiologist, his interests lie in Abdominal Imaging. Dr. Boland is Associate Editor for the Journal of American College of Radiology (Practice Management) and has 17 years industry experience in the role of Imaging Biomarkers in Drug Development. He is the current president of the Society of Abdominal Radiology.
